El 23 de septiembre, contra los Dodgers de Los Ángeles, el legendario bateador Albert Pujols alcanzó el exclusivo club de los 700 jonrones, convirtiéndose en el cuarto jugador de la historia en alcanzar el hito. Uniéndose a jugadores como Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds y Hank Aaron. Su entrada en el club convierte a Pujols en un futuro miembro del Salón de la Fama.
Pujols también se une a Hank Aaron como los dos únicos jugadores de las grandes ligas que han conseguido más de 700 jonrones y más de 3.000 hits. Además, Pujols es el único jugador que ha hecho lo anterior y que tiene más de 650 dobles en su carrera.
Pujols tiene una oposición principal que ha hecho que alcanzar este hito sea un poco más difícil, y es el Padre Tiempo. El bateador de 42 años no tiene la misma potencia del pasado que le valió el apodo de la Máquina. A pesar de que la potencia no es la misma, Pujols ha aplastado a los lanzadores zurdos esta temporada.
Contra los zurdos, esta temporada Pujols ha hecho 13 jonrones mientras batea .354 y se desliza .752 en 129 apariciones en el plato. A diferencia de los lanzamientos de los diestros, donde sólo ha registrado un promedio de bateo de .207 y 8 jonrones en 204 apariciones en el plato.
Resulta aún más fascinante darse cuenta de que Pujols ya habría alcanzado el club de los 700 antes si no fuera porque seis posibles jonrones le fueron arrebatados por las grandes jugadas defensivas del rival que mantuvieron la pelota en el parque. La más reciente fue el 28 de mayo de 2021, cuando Mike Tauchman, que entonces jugaba para los Gigantes de San Francisco, le robó a Pujols un jonrón en el walk-off.
En el partido contra los Dodgers, Pujols tenía 698 puntos. En la tercera entrada, con uno a favor y otro en contra, lanzó el número 699 a las gradas del jardín izquierdo ante Andrew Heaney. El número 700 llegaría en la siguiente entrada, con dos en juego y ante el derecho Phil Bickford.
En definitiva, su impacto quedará impreso para siempre en el juego. El campocorto Wander Franco, de los Rays de Tampa Bay, lleva el número 5 en homenaje a Pujols.

Pujols se enorgullece de ser un líder y un gran ejemplo para los jugadores más jóvenes del juego.
En una entrevista con John Denton, el escritor de los Cardenales para el sitio web de la MLB, Pujols dijo: «Significa mucho ser un ejemplo, no sólo para los jugadores dominicanos, sino también para los estadounidenses. He tratado de hacer siempre mi trabajo, nunca dar nada por sentado y disfrutar de este juego. Tengo la bendición de vestir este uniforme».
Albert Pujols gets 700 Home Runs
On September 23, against the Los Angeles Dodgers the legendary slugger Albert Pujols reached the exclusive 700 home run club becoming the fourth player in history to reach the milestone. Joining the likes of Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, and Hank Aaron. Cementing his spot in the club makes Pujols without a doubt a future Hall of Famer.
Pujols also joins Hank Aaron as the only two big leaguers to hit 700+ home runs and 3,000+ hits. On top of that Pujols is the only player to do the aforementioned and to have over 650 doubles in his career.
Pujols has one main opposition that made reaching this milestone a bit more challenging, and that is Father Time. The 42-year-old slugger doesn’t have the same power of the past that earned him the nickname the Machine. Despite the power not being the same, Pujols still has crushed left-handed pitchers this season.
Against Southpaws, this season Pujols has mashed 13 home runs while hitting .354 and slugging .752 in 129 plate appearances. As opposed to right-handed pitching where he has only posted a batting average of .207 and 8 home runs in 204 plate appearances.
It gets even more fascinating realizing Pujols would have already reached the 700 club sooner if it weren’t for six possible home runs being taken away by the opponent’s great defensive plays that kept the ball in the park. The most recent being on May 28, 2021, when Mike Tauchman who was then playing for the San Francisco Giants robbed Pujols of a walk-off home run.
Going into the game against the Dodgers Pujols sat at 698. In the third inning with one on and one out, he launched number 699 into the left field bleachers off Andrew Heaney. Number 700 would come in the very next inning with two on and off right-hander Phil Bickford.
Ultimately his impact will forever be imprinted on the game. Star shortstop Wander Franco of the Tampa Bay Rays wears #5 as a tribute to Pujols.
Pujols prides himself on being a leader and a great example for younger players in the game.
In an interview with John Denton, the Cardinals writer for the MLB website, Pujols said “It means a lot to be an example — not just for the Dominican players, but hopefully also for the American guys, too. I’ve tried to just always do my job, never take anything for granted and enjoy this game. I’m blessed to be wearing this uniform.”
